The Container Yard. Arts District. Los Angeles, California.

The owner of the Container Yard is Ash Chan (and his family). Ash’s dad made his fortune in real estate in Hong Kong. The site was formerly the home of Mikawaya. An ice cream company which made mochi flavored ice cream. The site is a little over an acre and has all the buildings used for making ans storing ice cream. The entire area is used  a gallery.

The artists have to present their idea for a wall to Ash Chan and he gives final approval. Being a fast worker is apparently the number one consideration for getting approval for a your work. The kicker the public is not allowed in. This is a gallery. The artists are already big names in street art  and are already in galleries. The draw for the street artists is the size of walls they get to work on. All the work is temporal which is in keeping with notion of street art being ephemeral.

There is a “public wall or walls.” These are the walls of the outer warehouses which face Seaton street  and East 4th street.

  1. This is on my list of places that I really want to visit! I know that LA has some really great street art. Do you follow @catscoffeecreativity on Instagram? She lives in New York but travels quite a bit and posts a lot of street art from around the U.S. She recently posted a bunch of new stuff from LA.

    1. Yeah. I think they are trying to make it exclusive. There was talk in the article of having nice restaurants and stores. They already host corporate bashes for artsy fartsy companies. They get to see the art.
